Gravel Driveway Calculator
Estimate project materials from measurements and product coverage. Verify requirements before ordering.
Calculate materials
Planning estimate only; check local codes and product specifications.
Measure the driveway layer you intend to place
- Enter driveway length and width in feet. Divide curved or widened sections into measurable areas rather than using one oversized rectangle.
- Enter the intended gravel-layer depth in inches. Estimate base and surface layers separately when their depths or materials differ.
- Set waste and select Calculate for cubic yards. Confirm how your supplier converts the ordered volume to delivered weight.
Gravel Driveway Calculator: formula and assumptions
Gravel (yd³) = driveway length × width × depth in inches ÷ 12 × (1 + waste ÷ 100) ÷ 27.
Worked calculation
A 60 × 12 ft driveway at 4 in depth with 10% waste requires 9.78 yd³.
What this estimate includes
Use the intended layer depth and measure each layer separately. Waste is not a compaction model; density, tonnage, delivery and subbase are excluded.
Planning details that change the estimate
The calculator converts a rectangular layer into loose volume plus your allowance. It does not model compaction or select a suitable driveway build-up. A finished compacted layer may require a different delivered loose quantity; ask the supplier or installer for the conversion used for that material. Keep excavation, geotextile, grading and drainage outside the gravel volume unless they are separately specified.
Gravel Driveway Calculator FAQs
Does the result include compaction?
No. The percentage is an added allowance, not a material-specific compaction calculation. Verify loose-to-compacted requirements separately.
How do I convert cubic yards to tons?
Use the supplier’s density for the actual gravel and moisture condition. A volume alone cannot determine an exact weight.
Can I estimate more than one layer?
Yes. Run each layer using its own footprint and depth, then retain separate material quantities when the products differ.
Does this estimate the installation cost?
No. It returns gravel volume. Delivery, labor, equipment, site preparation and drainage require their own prices.

Use the Gravel Calculator when you also need weight assumptions. Check combined volumes with the Cubic Yard Calculator, or compare a different driveway option using the Concrete Driveway Cost Calculator.
