How to use this calculator

  • Enter the wall’s length and height in feet.
  • Choose standard/modular (≈7 per sq ft) or jumbo (≈5 per sq ft) brick.
  • Set waste for cuts around openings.

The math behind it

Bricks = wall area × bricks per square foot (7 standard, 5 jumbo, including mortar joints), plus waste, rounded up. Mortar estimate assumes roughly 35 bricks per 60 lb bag. Counts are for single-wythe walls — double for structural double-wythe walls.

FAQs

How many bricks per square foot?

About 7 for standard modular brick with ⅜-inch mortar joints, about 5 for jumbo brick. A 20×8 ft wall needs roughly 1,176 standard bricks with 5% waste.

How much mortar do I need for brick?

Plan on one 60 lb bag of mortar mix per ~35 bricks. Like everything masonry, buy extra — matching mortar color later is difficult.
