Concrete Steps Calculator

Estimate project materials from measurements and product coverage. Verify requirements before ordering.

Calculate materials

Planning estimate only; check local codes and product specifications.

Measure a solid staircase, one consistent step at a time

  1. Enter overall staircase width in feet. Enter one equal tread depth and one equal riser height in inches.
  2. Enter a whole number of steps. The model assumes the same width, tread and rise throughout the staircase.
  3. Select Calculate to obtain cubic feet and cubic yards. Measure any landing or footing separately instead of including it in step count.

Concrete Steps Calculator: formula and assumptions

Solid stair volume (ft³) = width in feet × tread depth in feet × riser height in feet × n × (n + 1) ÷ 2, where n is the whole number of steps.

Worked calculation

A 4 ft wide staircase with 12 in treads, 7 in risers and 5 steps contains 35.00 ft³ = 1.30 yd³. One such step contains 2.33 ft³.

What this estimate includes

Assumes a solid staircase with equal risers and treads, supported down to a level base. It excludes landings, footings, hollow construction and waste. Dimensions are inputs, not a code-compliant stair design.

Planning details that change the estimate

The triangular sum n × (n + 1) ÷ 2 represents stacked rectangular volumes beneath successive treads. It assumes solid concrete down to a level base. A stair flight built over a sloping base, fill, a hollow form or a suspended slab can require a different quantity. For unequal steps, calculate the actual sections from drawings rather than averaging the geometry. No waste or reinforcement allowance is included in the displayed volume.

Concrete Steps Calculator FAQs

Does this calculate stair rise and run?

No. You supply tread and riser dimensions. The result is concrete volume, not a stair-layout recommendation or a compliance check.

Are landings included?

No. Estimate each landing as a separate slab and add its volume, taking care not to count overlapping concrete twice.

Can I enter half a step?

No. Step count must be a positive whole number. A partial geometric section needs its own volume calculation.

Does the result include footings or waste?

No. Add footing volume and any chosen placement allowance separately. Confirm the full stair construction detail before ordering.
