DRYWALL MATERIAL ESTIMATOR

Drywall Calculator

Estimate drywall sheets for four walls, an optional ceiling, doors and windows. Choose panel size and add a cutting allowance for a practical ordering estimate.

Enter finished room dimensions in feet. Subtract openings only where drywall will not be installed.

Area-based sheet counts are estimates, not a panel cutting or seam layout. Actual orders depend on orientation, openings, offcuts and required board types.

How to use the drywall calculator

1. Measure the room

Enter the inside length, width and finished wall height. For irregular rooms, calculate each rectangular section separately.

2. Include surfaces

Choose whether to board the ceiling and enter the combined area of openings that will not receive drywall.

3. Select your panels

Choose a sheet size and waste percentage. Confirm sheet length, thickness and performance requirements before purchasing.

Drywall calculator formula and worked example

Wall area = 2 × (length + width) × height

Ceiling area = length × width, when included. Net area = max(0, wall area + ceiling area − opening area). Order area = net area × (1 + waste percentage ÷ 100). Sheets = ceiling(order area ÷ sheet coverage).

Example: 12 × 10 ft room with 8 ft walls

With a drywall ceiling, 40 sq ft of doors and windows, 4 × 8 ft sheets and 10% waste:

StepCalculationResult
Four walls2 × (12 + 10) × 8352 sq ft
Ceiling12 × 10120 sq ft
After openings352 + 120 − 40432 sq ft
With 10% waste432 × 1.10475.2 sq ft
4 × 8 sheetsceil(475.2 ÷ 32)15 sheets

Fifteen sheets is an area-based minimum with the selected allowance. The physical cut layout may require more sheets, especially around corners and openings.

What affects drywall sheet quantities?

Sheet orientation

Horizontal and vertical hanging patterns create different joints and offcuts. Longer sheets may reduce seams but require suitable handling.

Openings and complex walls

Doors and windows reduce covered area, but cutouts can increase waste. Closets, soffits, stairwells and sloped ceilings need separate measurements.

Board specification

Thickness, fire resistance, moisture exposure, ceiling spacing and manufacturer requirements affect which panels are suitable; area alone cannot select them.

Before ordering

Allow for breakage, damaged corners, backing, joint treatment and delivery. Joint compound, tape, screws, corner bead and framing are not included in the sheet count.

Important limitations

This tool assumes a rectangular room with four vertical walls and a flat rectangular ceiling. It does not model framing, fastening patterns, rated wall assemblies, panel seam positions or curved surfaces. Follow building codes and manufacturer installation instructions.

Drywall Calculator FAQs

Does the drywall calculator include the ceiling?

Yes, by default. Change “Include ceiling?” to “No” for walls only.

How do I account for windows and doors?

Enter the combined opening area in square feet. The tool deducts that area before applying waste.

How many square feet does a 4 × 8 drywall sheet cover?

A 4 × 8 ft panel covers 32 sq ft before cuts. A 4 × 12 ft panel covers 48 sq ft.

Is a 10% waste allowance always enough?

No. Waste depends on the room geometry, openings, sheet orientation, breakage and cutting pattern. Ten percent is a starting assumption only.

Does this include screws, tape and joint compound?

No. The result estimates drywall sheets only; accessories require separate calculations.
