Use this gutter slope calculator to find the total drop along a gutter run and its slope as a percentage. Enter the gutter run length and the drop per 10 feet. The tool outputs slope and drop only.
How This Calculator Works
Total drop grows with run length: a longer run at the same drop per 10 feet must fall further from end to end. Slope percentage converts that drop into a share of the run length, so runs of different lengths can be compared.
Worked Example
For a 40 foot run at 0.25 inches per 10 feet: total drop is 40 / 10 x 0.25 = 1.00 inch, and slope is 1.00 / (40 x 12) x 100 = 0.21%. This meets the standard 0.25 inches per 10 feet.
Example Results
| Run | Drop per 10 ft | Total drop | Slope | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 40 ft | 0.125 in | 0.50 in | 0.10% | Below standard |
| 40 ft | 0.25 in | 1.00 in | 0.21% | Meets standard |
| 40 ft | 0.50 in | 2.00 in | 0.42% | Exceeds standard |
| 20 ft | 0.25 in | 0.50 in | 0.21% | Meets standard |
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the standard gutter slope?
The standard used by this tool is 0.25 inches of drop per 10 feet of gutter run.
How much drop does a 40 foot gutter need?
At the standard rate, a 40 foot run needs 1.00 inch of total drop.
Why does slope percentage stay the same for different runs at the standard rate?
Because both total drop and run length grow together, the ratio stays at 0.21% whenever the rate is 0.25 inches per 10 feet.
What happens if the slope is too shallow?
Water drains more slowly and may stand in the gutter. The tool flags a rate below 0.25 inches per 10 feet as below standard.
Does this calculator estimate gutter cost or downspouts?
No. This tool outputs slope and drop only. It does not calculate gutter cost or downspout count.
Should I check the installation requirements for my roof and gutter?
Yes. Use this estimate for planning and confirm the layout, fascia, and drainage with the product instructions or a qualified installer.
Method and Notes
Total drop (inches) = gutter run (feet) / 10 x drop per 10 feet (inches). Slope (%) = total drop / (gutter run x 12) x 100. The verdict compares the entered drop per 10 feet with the standard 0.25 inches per 10 feet: below, meets, or exceeds that standard.
