Recommended playground mulch setup
Choose a loose-fill playground mulch, such as engineered wood fibre, and plan for a deeper layer than garden mulch. The right depth depends on the fall height of the equipment, so check the equipment guidance and local safety rules before ordering. Edge the area to hold the loose material in place.
How much playground mulch at 6 and 12 inches deep
Volume in cubic yards = length (ft) × width (ft) × depth (in) ÷ 324. The table shows both ends of the 6 to 12 inch safety range, without a waste allowance, because loose-fill material settles and needs topping up.

Worked example: a 12 × 16 ft play area
Area = 12 × 16 = 192 sq ft. At 9 inches deep: 192 × 9 ÷ 324 = 5.33 cubic yards. At the full 12 inches deep: 192 × 12 ÷ 324 = 7.11 cubic yards. Plan the order around the depth your equipment requires, then top up as the material settles.
Method note
Measure the full fall zone around the equipment, not just the footprint of the play structure. Keep the loose-fill depth even across that zone, and measure depth after the material has settled, not only when it is first spread.
Playground mulch questions
Why is playground mulch so much deeper than garden mulch?
Garden mulch mainly suppresses weeds and holds moisture. Playground surfacing must cushion falls, so it needs a much deeper loose layer.
Can I use garden bark mulch under play equipment?
Do not assume garden bark is suitable. Use a product made for playground surfacing and follow its depth guidance for the equipment fall height.
How often should playground mulch be topped up?
Check depth regularly, especially under swings and at slide exits, where material moves and compacts. Top up to the required depth.
Does the table include a waste allowance?
No. The table shows the exact volume at each depth, so you can compare depths clearly. Order extra if the area will be topped up soon after installation.
