Mulch for a Tree Ring

Use this guide to plan mulch for a tree ring at a depth of 3 inches, using the ring area — not the full circle under the tree. For a different ring size, use the Mulch Calculator as the tool for custom sizes.

Recommended tree ring mulch setup

Choose bark mulch for a tree ring and keep it off the trunk. Spread a 3-inch layer in a flat ring around the tree, leaving a clear gap around the trunk so bark does not stay damp against it.

How much mulch for a tree ring at 3 inches deep

Ring area = 3.14 × (outer radius² − inner radius²). The table assumes a 1-foot-diameter trunk (inner radius 0.5 ft). Volume in cubic yards = ring area × 0.25 ÷ 27. Bag counts use 2-cubic-foot bags, rounded up.

Outer diameterRing areaVolume2-cubic-foot bags
6 ft27.49 sq ft0.25 cubic yards4 bags
8 ft49.48 sq ft0.46 cubic yards7 bags
10 ft77.75 sq ft0.72 cubic yards10 bags

Worked example: a 9 ft tree ring with a 1.5 ft trunk

Outer radius = 4.5 ft and inner radius = 0.75 ft. Ring area = 3.14 × (20.25 − 0.56) = 61.85 sq ft. Volume = 61.85 × 0.25 ÷ 27 = 0.57 cubic yards, which is 15.46 cubic feet. At 2 cubic feet per bag, that is 7.73 bags, so buy 8 bags.

Method note

Measure the outer diameter of the ring you will actually mulch, then subtract the trunk area. Do not use the full circle: that would over-order mulch and pile it against the trunk.

Tree ring mulch questions

Why keep mulch off the trunk?

Mulch piled against a trunk holds moisture against the bark and can cause rot. Leave a clear ring around the trunk and keep the mulch layer flat.

Is a tree ring the same as a garden bed?

No. A garden bed uses its full rectangle area. A tree ring uses only the ring area, so the trunk area is subtracted.

How wide should a tree ring be?

For a young tree, a ring out to the drip line is a useful guide. For an established tree, use the ring you can maintain without piling mulch on the trunk.

Should I use the bag count or cubic yards?

Use bags for small rings and cubic yards for large rings or several trees. Both come from the same ring area and 3-inch depth.

For custom ring sizes, use the Mulch Calculator.
