Plywood Calculator
Estimate plywood sheets based on surface coverage and cutting waste.
Calculate your estimate
Planning estimate only. Verify manufacturer specifications, local codes and project measurements.
Turn surface dimensions into a panel takeoff
- Measure the surface length and width in feet. Calculate separate rectangles for irregular layouts.
- Enter the area of one sheet in square feet; a 4 × 8 ft panel covers 32 ft² before cutting.
- Set waste, calculate sheets, then sketch panel joints and cuts before placing an order.
Plywood Calculator: formula and assumptions
Sheets = surface length × surface width × (1 + waste ÷ 100) ÷ sheet area, rounded up.
Worked calculation
A 20 × 16 ft surface is 320 ft². With 10% waste and 32 ft² sheets, the estimate is 11 sheets.
What this estimate includes
Area-based quantities do not optimize sheet layout. Confirm panel thickness, grade, orientation and support spacing separately.
Planning details that change the estimate
A sheet count based on total area does not guarantee that panels fit each required span or edge. Group surfaces by thickness and grade rather than treating all plywood as interchangeable. An opening reduces installed coverage but may still require a full panel to cut around it. Keep the cutting plan and structural specification separate from this area estimate.
Plywood Calculator FAQs
Does 11 sheets guarantee the layout will fit?
No. The count is area-based. Edge support, seams, grain direction and cuts may require additional sheets.
Can I use other sheet sizes?
Yes. Enter each sheet’s area in square feet and calculate different products separately.
Does this select plywood thickness?
No. Thickness, grade, exposure rating and support requirements must come from the project specification.
