Pool Volume Calculator

Estimate project quantities from your measurements. Confirm technical requirements before making purchases.

Calculate your estimate

Preliminary planning only. Actual requirements depend on site conditions and product specifications.

Measure the water, not the outside of the pool

  1. Enter inside water length and width in feet for a rectangular pool.
  2. Enter average water depth. For a uniformly sloping rectangular floor, use the average of shallow and deep water depths.
  3. Keep the US-gallon conversion factor and calculate capacity; estimate attached sections separately.

Pool Volume Calculator: formula and assumptions

US gallons = pool length × width × average water depth × gallons per cubic foot.

Worked calculation

30 × 15 × 5 × 7.48052 = 16,831 US gallons, rounded to the nearest gallon.

What this estimate includes

Assumes a rectangular pool with vertical sides. Use average water depth, not wall height. Curved shapes, steps and benches require separate volume adjustments. The conversion factor is for US liquid gallons.

Planning details that change the estimate

Benches, steps, curved walls and attached spas change actual water volume. A simple average of shallow and deep depths is not reliable when the bottom has ledges or distinct sections. Break those sections into suitable shapes instead. Confirm actual pool capacity before using it for treatment quantities and follow the treatment product’s instructions.

Pool Volume Calculator FAQs

Can I use wall height as depth?

Use water depth at the intended fill level. Wall height usually includes space above the water.

Does this work for a round pool?

Not directly. This calculator multiplies rectangular length and width.

Are these US gallons?

Yes, with the default 7.48052 gallons per cubic foot. Imperial gallons use a different conversion.
