How to use this calculator
- Enter the lawn area’s length and width (break irregular lawns into rectangles and add them up).
- Keep the default 5% cutting allowance; use 10% for curved beds and odd shapes.
- Add your supplier’s price per pallet for a cost estimate.
The math behind it
Pallets = area × (1 + waste) ÷ 500 sq ft per pallet, rounded up. A standard pallet covers about 500 square feet.
FAQs
How much sod do I need for 1,000 sq ft?
Two pallets cover 1,000 sq ft with a 5% cutting allowance. Order a third partial pallet only if your layout has heavy curves — suppliers sell by the pallet or by the piece.
Sod or seed — which should I choose?
Sod gives an instant lawn at roughly 5–10× the material cost of seed, and needs daily watering for the first weeks either way. Seed is cheaper and offers more grass varieties; sod wins for erosion-prone slopes and instant results.
