Measure flooring by room, then check the installation layout

Measure finished floor length and width in feet. For an L-shaped room, split the floor into rectangles and add their areas; this tool accepts one rectangle at a time. Read coverage per carton from the exact product label. Plank dimensions alone may not reflect the quantity in a carton.

Flooring formula and worked example

Floor area = length × width. Order area = floor area × (1 + waste ÷ 100). Cartons = order area ÷ carton coverage, rounded up to a whole carton. A 15 × 12 ft room is 180 ft². At 10% waste, 198 ft² ÷ 22 ft² per carton = 9 cartons. At 20 ft² per carton, the same project needs 10 cartons, covering 200 ft².

What to check before ordering

Use a waste allowance appropriate to the plank direction, pattern, cuts and room shape. The result does not optimize plank cuts, choose a subfloor or include underlayment, transitions, adhesive or delivery. Carton rounding already adds some surplus; decide separately whether more matching stock is needed for future repairs.

Flooring questions

Should closets be included?

Include every area receiving the selected flooring. Measure closets and alcoves separately and avoid counting overlapping rectangles twice.

Can I combine several rooms before rounding?

For the same product and batch, sum required area first and divide by carton coverage once. Rounding each room separately can increase the order.

Does waste mean damaged flooring only?

No. It can include unusable offcuts, pattern matching and an intentional reserve. Choose an allowance for the layout instead of assuming one percentage fits every project.
