BTU Heating Calculator
Estimate project quantities from your measurements. Confirm technical requirements before making purchases.
Calculate your estimate
Preliminary planning only. Actual requirements depend on site conditions and product specifications.
Use the heating factor as an explicit assumption
- Measure the room’s length and width in feet.
- Enter ceiling height in feet and a positive BTU-per-square-foot factor appropriate to your planning scenario.
- Calculate the rough heating rate in BTU/h; compare scenarios without treating the result as a final equipment specification.
BTU Heating Calculator: formula and assumptions
Heating estimate (BTU/h) = room length × width × (ceiling height ÷ 8) × entered BTU per ft² factor.
Worked calculation
A 20 × 15 ft room with an 8 ft ceiling and factor 25 gives 7,500 BTU/h. Raising the ceiling to 10 ft gives 9,375 BTU/h.
What this estimate includes
This is a simple area-based rule adjusted for height, not a heat-loss calculation or equipment selection. The factor assumes an 8 ft reference ceiling. Insulation, climate, air leakage and glazing are not modeled. Have a qualified HVAC professional verify sizing.
Planning details that change the estimate
The model scales the entered area factor by ceiling height relative to 8 feet. It does not calculate heat loss through walls, glazing or air leakage, and it does not retrieve climate data. Its output is a heating rate, not annual fuel use. Equipment selection needs a load assessment that accounts for the building and operating conditions.
BTU Heating Calculator FAQs
Why does ceiling height change the result?
The formula multiplies the area-based estimate by ceiling height divided by eight. This is a simplified adjustment.
Is 25 BTU per square foot a recommendation?
No. It is an editable demonstration factor, not a verified requirement for your building.
Can I use this to select an air conditioner?
This tool models a rough heating scenario. It is not a cooling-load calculation or a replacement for professional sizing.

Check room area with the Square Footage Calculator. Plan insulation quantities with the Insulation Calculator and a separate window budget with the Window Replacement Cost Calculator; neither link calculates the resulting heat-loss reduction.
