CONSTRUCTION CALCULATORS / PROJECT ESTIMATOR

Insulation Calculator

Estimate insulation packages from area, waste and coverage per pack. Check product thickness, R-value and manufacturer installation requirements.

Inputs to confirm: wall or attic area, insulation package coverage and target R-value.

Calculate your materials

Adjust the inputs to match your project. Results update when you select Calculate.

Preliminary planning only. Confirm actual material specifications, safety and local code requirements.

Use coverage at the intended installed thickness

Measure the net surface receiving insulation in square feet. Enter the coverage per package from the exact product’s label at the intended thickness and R-value. Do not use a bag’s maximum spread area when the required installed depth calls for less coverage.

Insulation package formula

Packages = area × (1 + waste ÷ 100) ÷ package coverage, rounded up. With 800 ft², 50 ft² per package and no waste, the result is 16 packages. With a 10% allowance, 880 ÷ 50 = 17.6, or 18 packages.

Insulation questions

Does this choose an R-value?

No. Required performance depends on climate, assembly, existing insulation and applicable requirements. The calculator estimates packages after you select a suitable product and coverage.

Can one coverage number be used for batts and loose fill?

Use the coverage stated for each product. Batt dimensions, loose-fill installed depth and product density are different purchasing assumptions.

Does compression change the estimate?

This area-based tool does not model thermal performance. Follow installation instructions rather than compressing a product to make it fit an unsuitable cavity.

The Department of Energy’s Consumer Guide to Home Insulation explains insulation selection and evaluating existing performance.

Measure adjacent materials

Use Square Footage for area conversions, Wall Stud for preliminary framing quantities and Drywall for sheet coverage. These are separate material estimates.

Worked example and planning table

Worked example: 1,000 ft², 40 ft² per pack, 10% waste

Step 1: Adjusted area = 1,000 x (1 + 10 / 100) = 1,000 x 1.10 = 1,100 ft².

Step 2: Raw packages = 1,100 / 40 = 27.5 packages.

Step 3: Round up to the next whole package, because packages cannot be bought in fractions: 28 packages.

Result: 28 packages. Check: 28 x 40 = 1,120 ft² of coverage, which covers the adjusted 1,100 ft².

Planning table: packages for 800 ft² at 10% waste (illustrative)

Adjusted area = 800 x 1.10 = 880 ft². Packages are rounded up. These are illustrative calculations from the tool formula, not a product recommendation.

Coverage per packRaw packages (880 / coverage)Packages to buy (rounded up)
40 ft²22.022
50 ft²17.618
64 ft²13.7514

Check: 880 / 40 = 22; 880 / 50 = 17.6, rounded up to 18; 880 / 64 = 13.75, rounded up to 14.

More frequently asked questions

Should I subtract doors and windows from the wall area? Use the net surface to be insulated. Measure the wall area, then subtract large openings that will not be insulated, rather than entering the gross wall area.

Why does the result round up instead of rounding to the nearest package? Rounding down could leave part of the adjusted area uncovered. Rounding up ensures the bought coverage is at least the adjusted area.

What waste percentage should I use for a cut-up attic? Use a higher waste percentage than for a plain rectangular area, because cuts, obstructions, and offcuts increase waste. Compare a low and a high waste run to see how the package count changes.

Sources and method note

Method: adjusted area = surface area x (1 + waste / 100); packages = adjusted area / coverage per pack, rounded up to the next whole package. No named source is cited here. Prices and coverage vary by product, region, and manufacturer, and R-value and thickness must be checked separately, so treat the result as a planning estimate only.
