CONSTRUCTION CALCULATOR
Drywall Mud Calculator
Estimate how much joint compound and joint tape you need for a drywall area — mud and tape only.
Tool preset, labelled as such: mud gallons = area × 0.05 gallons per square foot for 3 coats, adjusted by coats ÷ 3.
This calculator does not output drywall sheets. For sheets, use the Drywall Calculator.

How to use this calculator
Enter the total drywall area in square feet, the number of coats, and your bucket size. The tool updates instantly. Buckets and tape rolls are rounded up to whole units, because you cannot buy part of a bucket or roll.
Worked example — checked against the tool
For 1,200 sq ft with 3 coats and 4.5-gallon buckets: mud = 1,200 × 0.05 × (3 ÷ 3) = 60.0 gallons; buckets = ceil(60.0 ÷ 4.5) = 14; tape = ceil(1,200 ÷ 350) = 4 rolls.

Frequently asked questions
Does this calculator include drywall sheets?
No. It covers mud and tape only. Use the Drywall Calculator for sheets.
Why are buckets rounded up?
Buckets are sold whole, so the tool rounds up to the next full bucket.
How does the number of coats change the result?
Mud gallons scale with coats ÷ 3, so 2 coats use two-thirds of the 3-coat amount for the same area.
What does the tape calculation assume?
One tape roll per 350 sq ft of drywall area, rounded up to a whole roll.
Can I change the bucket size?
Yes. Enter any bucket size in gallons and the bucket count updates.
Is this a purchase quantity or an exact usage amount?
Gallons are the estimated amount needed; buckets and tape rolls are whole purchase units, rounded up.
Method note
Mud gallons = area × 0.05 gallons per sq ft for 3 coats × (coats ÷ 3). Buckets = ceil(gallons ÷ bucket size). Tape rolls = ceil(area ÷ 350). These are tool presets for planning; actual use varies with joint layout, texture, and application.
