Thinset Calculator

Use this thinset calculator to estimate how many 50 pound bags of thinset you need for a tiling job. Enter the tiled area, choose your trowel notch, and add a waste allowance. The tool outputs thinset bags and weight only.

How This Calculator Works

Each trowel notch covers a set area per 50 pound bag. The calculator divides your area, increased by waste, by that coverage, and rounds up to whole bags, because you cannot buy part of a bag.

Worked Example

For 100 square feet with a 1/4 inch square notch at 85 square feet per bag: 100 x 1.10 = 110, and 110 / 85 = 1.29, rounded up to 2 bags, or 100 pounds.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many bags of thinset do I need for 100 square feet?

It depends on the trowel notch. With a 1/4 inch square notch and 10% waste, the answer is 2 bags of 50 pounds.

Does a larger trowel notch use more thinset?

Yes. A larger notch leaves a thicker bed, so coverage per bag falls and the number of bags rises.

Why add waste?

Waste covers mixing loss, spillage, and cuts. The default is 10%, and you can change it.

Does this calculator count tiles or grout?

No. This tool outputs thinset bags and weight only. It does not calculate tile count or grout.

Should I check the thinset manufacturer’s coverage?

Yes. Coverage varies by product and trowel, so use this estimate for planning and check the bag you buy.

What if my trowel size is not listed?

Choose the closest listed notch for a planning estimate, then confirm coverage for your actual trowel and product.

Method and Notes

Bags = area x (1 + waste / 100) / coverage per bag, rounded up to a whole bag. Weight = bags x 50 pounds. Coverage figures in the dropdown are tool presets for planning, not a verified claim about any single product.
